When Supporting a Family Member Goes Wrong

22 Jan

In the sports world, tensions naturally arise on the field and off. The players are battling for a championship and it’s natural for their family members to defend them, supporting them as they hope to perform at the highest level to the best of their ability. But sometimes that defense goes too far. Another example of going too far occurred Sunday night when Anna Burns Welker, wife of Patriot wideout Wes Welker, went to Facebook to air her frustrations about the Patriots losing the AFC Championship to Baltimore. “Proud of my husband and the Pats,” Welker wrote on her Facebook page. “By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!” She has since apologized for her comments and deleted the post, but everyone is talking about it because she took the loss personal and went way too far. ”I let the competitiveness of the game and the comments people were making about a team I dearly love get the best of me,” she said after. This is hardly the only time a wife/husband/parent/sibling/child has went too far supporting a family member, however. Let’s look back at some other rants-gone-wrong.

Gisele’s post-Super Bowl rant last year: Supermodel Gisele Bundchen was the trailblazer for Patriot wives’ postgame rants. Gisele was not happy at all with husband Tom Brady’s receivers after the loss to the Giants in last year’s Big Game, and let her feelings known for everyone to hear.

Marcus Vick goes off on Eagles: Michael Vick’s brother Marcus was a great college football quarterback many thought was definitely following in his older brother’s footsteps in the NFL. Numerous jail sentences later, he was at home watching his brother’s Eagles get embarrassed on Monday Night Football and chose Twitter to let out his anger.

LeBron’s Mom goes at Paul Pierce: This was classic. In a heated Cavs-Celtics series, Gloria James decided she was going to be the one to protect LeBron from harm. He colorfully told her to sit down in turn.

Boxer’s Mom jumps into the Ring: This one makes Gloria James look soft. I wonder where the mom and son are now? The boxer’s rep surely took a hit.

Any others out there? Hope you enjoyed the post!

You know, deleting something after it is posted is basically admitting you were wrong in the first place. They way I look at it is like this: If you made the post (which you meant, whether it be in the heat of the moment or not) and then the media reports it, it’s out there. If you delete it when people go to check the social networking page, it kind of goes without saying that you shouldn’t have posted it in the first place. Apologizing about it is a sideways move.

I’m smelling something a little bit deeper in the Ray Lewis thing. You could argue that the comment about having 6 kids with four different mothers may have been an underhanded racially charged comment, I certainly hope that’s not the case, but I am sure that there are African American sports talk radio hosts all over America who have brought that up in conversation.

Another thing that people seem to forget is that Ray Lewis didn’t kill anyone. He was convicted of obstruction of justice.

I had forgotten about the Marcus Vick thing but remember Marcus Vick is a clown who doesn’t have a fraction of the talent his brother does.

I’m starting to think Facebook and all of the other social networking sites are becoming the poison by which our society now self-medicates. It’s almost as if everybody has a website that’s a television show wheere they can braodcast their own opinions. Which is great, but the only thing is most people’s opinions aren’t very well thought out.

I got one for you. Do you remember when the Lakers played the Kings in the pre-season at the height of their rivalry? Rick Fox and Doug Christie got into it on the court and got ejected from that game. Well, it didn’t end there. Fox ran around the back to meet Christie and finish their business. They got into it again and in comes Christie’a wife swinging her purse at Fox and hitting him. That was hilarious!

Here’s another one. Remember how the Williams sisters had their father running around crying about how racist tennis fans were? Did you notice he disappeared right after that?
